Restore Extended Hours for Open Newbury Street
Thanks to pressure by people like Back Bay Association President Meg Mainzer-Cohen, Open Newbury St ends at 6 pm this year instead of 8 pm. So in less than 20 minutes, all these people will be forced out of the street onto the sidewalks. IMO, this is total failure of leadership at City Hall. If you have the opportunity, please let Mayor Wu (and your City Councilors) know what you think about this.
Restoring 8 PM is a no-brainer for local businesses. Restaurants are losing 20-30% of Sunday revenue with the early closure, and that's money walking out the door straight to suburban competitors.
This isn't just about revenue—it's about who gets to shape public space. The 6 PM closure caters to a handful of wealthy residents while ignoring the thousands of visitors and workers who actually use the street. That's not democracy, that's privilege.
We've seen this playbook before. When New York tested pedestrian plazas in Times Square, early complaints about noise and congestion nearly killed it—but with proper management, it became a permanent success. Boston can learn from that.
Adding security and sanitation sounds good on paper, but who pays for that? And what happens when noise complaints spike again? A pilot program is just kicking the can down the road unless there's a real enforcement plan.
An 8 PM closure unlocks something special: Newbury Street as a true evening destination. Picture families lingering over dinner, street musicians playing under the lights, and a safe, vibrant corridor that draws people from all over the city. That's worth fighting for.
Both sides have valid points—residents deserve peace, and businesses need those evening hours. A structured pilot with clear metrics and a community feedback loop can test whether we can have both. That's the middle ground worth exploring.
