Commuter Ferry for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area
There's probably something glaringly obvious that I just can't think of, but wouldn't it be a great idea to have a commuter ferry to Toronto from spring to fall? Why aren't we taking advantage of the lake and providing another option for transportation for those living outside of Toronto? Like a People ferry from Oshawa or Pickering to Oakville with a stop at Queen's quay. Everyone hates driving and getting stuck on The Gardener or DVP, having this is another option for people who want to get into the city and transit about would be pretty cool.
A ferry from Oshawa to Toronto won't move enough people to matter. At 200 passengers per trip and three round trips a day, you're moving maybe 1,200 people—that's less than 1% of the Gardiner's daily traffic. Show me the math on how this scales before asking for $20 million.

This is a genuine equity win. Low-income workers in Pickering and Oshawa are stuck with either expensive GO fares or brutal drives, and this ferry could offer a cheaper, calmer option that doesn't require owning a car.

New York's Staten Island Ferry carries 70,000 people daily and Sydney's ferries move millions annually. This isn't speculative—it's proven. The GTHA is just decades behind in using its best natural asset.

What happens when a winter storm hits in November? This is seasonal only—April to October—so you're building infrastructure that sits idle half the year. That's a hard sell for taxpayers funding year-round docks.

A ferry unlocks something bigger than just another commute option: it turns Lake Ontario into a transit corridor, opens waterfront development potential, and gives people back two hours of their day. That's a quality-of-life game changer.

The real tension here is between speed of implementation and scale. A pilot in 2–3 years is fast, but we need to be honest that it won't replace the Gardiner—it's a complementary option. The question is whether we can fund both this and rail expansion without shortchanging either.
