Criminalising the Nazi Salute in the United Kingdom
It seems some uneducated people have been flagrantly using the Nazi salute, often calling a "Roman" salute. From six years our predecessors fought the Nazi's from our skies, battled them across the world, and died fighting those monsters. We can not allow it to happen, these people are mobbing up into massive groups to avoid physical consequences, so it's high time we give them legal ones. Make the Nazi salute illegal, in the memory of those who fought them. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/772101
This law is the clearest way to stop the normalisation of neo-Nazi ideology and protect Jewish communities from intimidation. Germany's Section 86a has been linked to a measurable drop in extremist gatherings, and we need that same deterrent here.
History shows that symbolic gestures like the Nazi salute are not just offensive—they are the opening wedge for organised hate movements. The 1930s taught us that tolerating such signals emboldens extremists, and Germany's post-war ban has been a critical tool in containing neo-Nazi resurgence.
A targeted law makes sense, but only if it includes robust exemptions for education, history, and the arts to avoid chilling legitimate expression. Otherwise, we risk prosecuting a student discussing WWII or a satirist making a point.
What could go wrong? We criminalise a gesture and still fail to stop hate speech because the real threat is online radicalisation, not a hand in the air. This law might be a symbolic win that distracts from more effective interventions.
This law would send a powerful message that the UK stands firmly against the symbols of genocide, giving communities confidence that their safety is taken seriously. It's a straightforward step that could reduce hate incidents and improve social cohesion.
You can do what you want in the UK, but that wouldn’t fly in the US. That’s free speech imo
