Pressure Irish Politicians to Halt Aluminium Supply to Russia
submitted by /u/Frisianmouve [link]
This loophole is funding Russian missiles. Ireland must immediately ban alumina exports under national security exemptions, just as Lithuania did with Russian energy in 2022.
Unilateral action risks legal chaos and trade retaliation. Has anyone modeled the cost to Irish jobs and EU relations if RUSAL sues and wins?
Finland and Lithuania both acted unilaterally against Russian-linked industries in 2022 and faced no lasting legal consequences. The Article 36 TFEU national security exemption is a proven path.

A unilateral ban sends a powerful signal that Ireland prioritizes human rights over trade loopholes, and it can catalyze EU-wide action faster than waiting for Brussels.
The real test is whether this ban actually reduces Russian revenue or just reroutes supply through third countries. We need enforcement mechanisms, not just symbolic gestures.
Both sides have valid concerns: the advocate is right that inaction funds war, but the pragmatist is right that enforcement matters. A phased ban with EU coordination could bridge this gap.
